In celebrating its eleventh year of sponsoring the Anguilla Summer Festival’s Talented Teen Pageant, CCB again hosted a make-up and skin care session under the guidance of Rachel Haskins, an esthetician/hairdresser who works at Cap Juluca.
The purpose of the session was to help prepare the contestants for their photo shoot as well as to aid the girls in achieving the ancient art of make-up application, which is to enhance natural beauty rather than mask the face with the look of artificiality.
The skin care segment was beneficial in that it educated the contestants about the necessary and basic skincare techniques that every teenager, particularly, those suffering with acne, oily or dry skin, should be acquainted with. The session was held on Saturday, June 18, at the Caribbean Commercial Bank’s Training Room. All five contestants along with their chaperones and parents were present. Also in attendance were members of the CCB Trendsetters, organizers for this year’s Pageant.
The session, which begun at 9:00 am included Rachel’s individual attention to the contestants based on their unique skin tones. The young ladies were each required, as part of the whole learning experience, to apply their own make-up. For most of the girls, the idea of applying make-up and skin care was a new and sometimes awkward learning experience. Rachel wanted to show the girls the importance of skin care before make-up application and the long-term benefits of wrinkle reduction, pore cleansing and preventing acne.
The process began with the cleansing of the skin using an exfoliating scrub to remove dead particles, followed by conditioning and moisturizing of the skin with attention also being paid to the lip and eye areas. In about two hours, the girls were aesthetically transformed and appeared as young goddesses with exquisite taste.
Twenty-year-old Rachel Haskins attended the Christine Valmy Esthetics School, NY, where she did two make-up courses for a period of six months. The first course entailed a basic make-up (day, evening and bridal) and the second was advanced make-up (costume make-up). Ms. Haskins also completed one year of hair dressing at Vidal Sassoon in London.
DAILY MAKE UP
• Foundation wash--diluting foundation with water to give a sheer finish
• Use neutral shadow, blush, lipstick, light application of liner and mascara.
• Never fill in eyebrows with liner, especially black. Use a dark eye shadow and apply with an angled brush.
• Do not put black lip liner on with gloss (this goes for anytime of the day).
EVENING MAKE UP
• Heavier coverage foundation.
• Eye Shadows--cool colours work best (blue, violet, green or silver), frost gloss and heavier mascara and liner.
• Less make up is always more. Emphasise your best features and apply as little to your lesser ones.
• Always apply moisturizer before applying make-up, this helps foundation to glide on.
