Training At Caribbean Commercial Bank

Article appearing in The Anguilla, May 2001

At the twenty-fourth Annual Meeting of the Caribbean Commercial Bank (Anguilla) Limited the Bank took time off to recognize the achievements of staff members for long service and education. Caribbean Commercial Bank has taken a proactive approach to Human Resource Development specifically in the area of training and development of their staff. Several programs with the Graduate School of Banking-Madison Wisconsin, Institute of Canadian Bankers, University of the West Indies Distance Learning Program, and the Eastern Caribbean Institute of Banking (ECIB) have been financed totally by the Bank.
The ECIB is a by-product of the East Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) of which CCB holds membership. The main objective of ECIB is to ensure that bank staffs in member territories are trained to meet the challenges of an ever-changing financial environment. In fact the first part of our training policy reads as follows: -
"The Bank would like to emphasize that with the fast emerging internationalization and globalization of economies, competition among service providers increases. A stable and efficient banking system is complementary and essential to continuous economic development. As Banking and Financial Markets become more sophisticated and competitive generally, banking institutions can only meet these challenges effectively by upgrading their services and streamlining their operations. Human resources play a key role in meeting these challenges. There is a growing awareness therefore, that any bank or organization for that matter will loose competitiveness if it overlooks the importance of training and development of its workforce."
This ECIB initiative supports our training policy. The main objectives of our training policy are: -
To improve the level of efficiency and productivity of staff in the performance of their duties
To improve the profitability of the Bank
To encourage employees to undertake relevant academic and practical training
To improve the education and skills of the members of staff
The CCB Chairman in his statement to the shareholders in 1999 stated in part "the
Bank recognizes that our human resource is our most valued asset. In this regard the Bank will recognize and reward staff for performance. We will provide the necessary tools for staff to do the job through appropriate training".
Further, he said that the development of our human resource would also focus on:
Leadership development through better performance.
Succession planning to identify and foster a new generation of leaders
Better career management and job growth opportunities to attract and retain the best performers.
The long distance training program with Canadian Institute of Banking was introduced to CCB by the ECIB and is one that lends credence to the proposal of the CCB Chairman. The program was made available to all of the staff-a number of which enrolled in mid 1998. They remain enthused with the course content and see the program as a challenge.
Credit Department personnel, Mrs. Vanessa Connor of North Side and Ms. Karen York of the Farrington are the first employees to gain the Diploma, which certifies that they have fulfilled the conditions of the Financial Services Studies Program and are, equally designated Associate of the Institute of Canadian Bankers.
In remarking on their performance Managing Director Preston Bryan noted that it tooK dedication and commitment for these two staff members to complete the program. The rest of the staff who have enrolled has demonstrated similar pursuits for excellence and with the same dedication and commitment will graduate shortly.
